A few of the girls and I after our last Saturday morning training

And just like that our first spring Group Skills Training program has come to an end! Between April and May we had 14 workouts that focused on improving and building confidence on and off the court. It was life-giving for me to meet 5 fifth/sixth grade girls in March that were quiet and timid in some ways, and then say see you later in May to girls that were more confident and better basketball players.  This spring the phrase that I constantly repeated every week to the girls as we began our workouts was “work hard, make mistakes, get better”. Working hard includes going hard in every drill and not taking any reps off. Because we are humans and therefore not perfect, when we go hard on the court we’ll make mistakes. Rather than trying to prevent mistakes I encourage the girls to welcome their mistakes because we can learn from them. Learning from our mistakes and the mistakes of others will make us better basketball players. After 14 workouts I can confidently tell you that week after week the girls worked hard, made mistakes and got better.  The phrase “work hard, make mistakes, get better” has not only impacted how I coach and train girls but also other areas of my life, for example with building TRUCE. As I work on taking TRUCE to the next level I need to continue to work hard and give it my best. And in that process I might make some mistakes along the way that will help me to do and be better in the future. My hope is that this phrase also sticks for TRUCE girls, not only on the basketball court but also off the court as well.

DID YOU KNOW…

“Annual market revenue from team registrations, travel, apparel, equipment and other expenses grew to $28 billion in 2021 from $3.5 billion in 2010.” (NY Times – “The Income Gap Is Becoming a Physical-Activity Divide”) At TRUCE Basketball we have individual payment options available to ensure that our service fees remain affordable for all families. TRUCE Basketball exists so that girls, and their families, from inner city/underserved communities have access to quality, competitive basketball. Our heart to make sure no girl is left behind due to finances.

WHAT THE ADULTS ARE SAYING…

“Gabby is amazing. She is very knowledgeable, patient, and kind. She does a wonderful job at teaching the fundamentals of basketball and also helps the girls be more confident. We have seen a big improvement in our daughter since she completed the training.” – Mom of 5th grade girl
